The incredible situation of public debt in all Western countries cannot be explained only in terms of irresponsible politicians and murky accounting. Such radical denial of reality has also cultural roots: the myth of the affluent society based on scientific progress and on technocratic politics that has been the absolutely dominant narrative in the West at least since the mid 1950's.

A classic David Brooks column. Read also the first comment as a perfect example the effects of a contemporary college education: Brooks suggests that people would be better off doing XYZ, the lady from Boston replies vehemently that nobody can force her to do XYZ! Another great mind lost to agriculture.
