The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde

A discussion with Professor Joseph PEARCE, Director, Center for Faith and Culture, Aquinas College and Dr. Paul FORTUNATO, Associate Professor in English at the University of Houston-Downtown, and Dr. Dominic A. AQUILA Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of St. Thomas

Presented by Crossroads Cultural Center in collaboration with the University of St. Thomas Office of Academic Affairs

Vilified by fellow Victorians for his sexuality and his dandyism, Oscar Wilde is often hailed today as a “progressive” sexual liberator. Professor Pearce, author of The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde, strips away the many masks that Wilde wore to show the real man and his deepest aspirations and desires. This powerful and controversial talk uncovers how Wilde’s “heart of stone” was broken by the two year prison sentence and probes the deeper thinking behind his many works, including the lingering influence of his love affair with the Catholic Church. Dr. Paul Fortunato, Associate Professor in English at the University of Houston, will open the event with remarks on Oscar Wilde's lasting significance in modern literature.

The event is open to the public and free of charge.
